Xbox Series X looks more powerful than PS5! But is that enough? – As we’ve already reported at Leak.com, all indications are that the Xbox Series X will feature the most powerful SoC AMD Zen 2 + RDNA2 of its generation, offering 12 TFLOPs of computing power while the PS5 will offer ‘only’ 9.2 TFLOPs.
It’s a very significant difference, which will surely make a difference throughout the life cycle of both consoles.
After all, in case you’re not aware, one of the reasons PlayStation 4 has won on the current generation of consoles is that it is slightly more powerful than Xbox One. Something that turns out to be very curious, since the hardware is quite similar to having an SoC developed by AMD as well. In other words, we’ll have a repeat of what happened in 2013! (In a reverse way)
But is an Xbox more powerful than Sony’s console enough for Microsoft to win?
So how many ‘third-party’ studios will actually use all the extra performance of Xbox? Doesn’t it make more sense to use PlayStation 5 as the base platform for multi-platform game development?
We’re talking about studios that are responsible for a huge number of important games like Capcom, Ubisoft, Take-Two, EA and Activision. In case you didn’t know, the next 3 years will be quite complicated for the programmers of these companies… After all, it will be necessary to launch games for 8 different platforms! (3 from Sony and 5 from Microsoft)
Of course, studios can’t forget the many versions of Xbox One, nor PS4 and PS4 Pro just because new consoles have been released. We’re talking about 100 million consoles around the world just for PlayStation 4. There are a lot of consumers who want to keep playing, but don’t have to buy a new generation console when it comes out. (End 2020)
New generation consoles won’t immediately replace the many millions of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles
That said, it seems that both Microsoft and Sony have already created their new consoles with this in mind. That is, the new PS5 and Xbox Series X will be basically an extension of the current consoles, bringing new features and new hardware.
In short, it will be an experience very similar to what you find in the world of PCs. In which you can change some parts of your machine to increase performance. However, your PC’s compatibility will be exactly the same, just getting faster and more capable.
And as such, during the transition period between generations, both generations will have the same exact multi-platform games, such as FIFA, GTA, UFC, etc… The idea is to maximize the profit from each release to the studios. And for that, all the games will have to be compatible with the old generation, but also with the new one.
